WELLS FOR HUMAN WELFARE & CHIMP CONSERVATION!

9/9/2018

This week the Bulindi Chimpanzee & Community Project (BCCP) invited residents to celebrate the opening - and official handing over to the communities - of 3 new village wells! These wells not only bring safe water to 100s of local households within the range of the Wagaisa chimpanzees, they reduce confrontational interactions between the chimps and people collecting water from forest streams.

We were joined by special guests - the amazing folks at BridgIt Water Foundation, Walk For Water 100, and Dennis Langley Foundation who sponsored the wells!

Thank you to them and everyone who has helped make our Water Project happen!

Over the next few months BCCP aims to help bring clean water to more communities in Hoima sharing habitats with chimps. Watch this space ...

Just around the corner...

The first ever WORLD CHIMPANZEE DAY is around the corner!
The Bulindi Chimpanzee & Community Project is a grassroots conservation project dedicated to conserving chimpanzees under unimaginable pressure in Uganda's Hoima District. Here, around 300 chimps have lost almost their entire natural habitat to deforestation and agriculture. The challenges to conservation in this region are enormous and -- as English soccer fans will understand -- there are no overnight wins! But, step by step, we ARE making a difference, and we're in it for the long haul.

If you can help, please donate to our project this World Chimpanzee Day. All donations go directly to our programs on the ground. Thanks and Pant Hoots to our sponsor Friends of Chimps!

HUGE PANTHOOTS TO RICHARD!

Richard is now two thirds through his whopping 2,500km walk across Australia and has even clocked in 65kms in JUST ONE DAY! All to raise money to construct wells for villages without access to clean and safe water where our project works in Hoima District - what a hero!!
The water boreholes will also help alleviate human-chimpanzee conflict, because villagers (normally women and children) currently encounter chimpanzees when they collect water at forest streams on a daily basis. These encounters can be dangerous for both people and chimps.

A young male chimp of the Wagaisa community. The Wagaisa chimps regularly use a small forest strip along a stream in Bulemwa village.
Villagers come into contact daily with the chimps when collecting water from the stream. Funds raised by Richard will enable us to construct a borehole in Bulemwa village, away from the forest, which should reduce encounters between the chimps and people.

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE - STAFF DEVELOPMENT

Update from BCCP's volunteer Field Operations Manager, Georgia Lorenti
The Bulindi Chimpanzee & Community Project (BCCP) continues to expand in an urgent effort to alleviate the enormous pressure facing wild chimpanzees and thir habitat throughout Uganda’s Hoima District. The BCCP family has grown exponentially due to the establishment of new EOCA European Outdoor Conservation Association funded tree nurseries this year and the acquisition of additional staff members, including nursery staff, tree planting monitors and chimpanzee monitors. This week we embarked on a development program for all our tree nursery personnel. Employee training is important for workplace safety, productivity and the strengthening of skills. Development programs are equally important to increase staff satisfaction and morale. Investment in training shows employees they are valued and helps create a supportive workplace. Our development program involved an informative presentation from senior Project Manager Moses Ssemahunge and Planting Monitor Lorian Mutegeki. It also included a practical workshop and provided nursery personnel with a platform to offer feedback on project activities. The development program was held at one of our new nursery sites at Kiraira and showcased the outstanding work of Prossy Nyabigambo, BCCP’s first female staff member – she showed those boys!
